Thomson, Virgil
(25 nov. 1896, Kansas City, Mo., EE.UU.–30 sep. 1989, Nueva York, N.Y.).

Compositor y crítico estadounidense. Estudió en la Universidad de Harvard con el propósito de convertirse en pianista y organista. Mientras cursaba estudios en París con Nadia Boulanger (1921), conoció a los compositores franceses conocidos como Les Six y su círculo, y luego se inició en la composición. Durante su residencia en París (1925–40) tomó contacto con Gertrude Stein, con quien compuso las óperas Four Saints in Three Acts (1928) y The Mother of Us All (1946), las que poseen un encantador estilo naïve. De regreso en Nueva York, trabajó como crítico musical del Herald Tribune (1940–54) y sus críticas, escritas con elegancia, fueron respetadas por centrarse en la música más que en los intérpretes. Entre otras obras de su autoría figuran la música para los filmes The Plow That Broke the Plains (1936) y The Louisiana Story (1949, Premio Pulitzer).
